The Cap d’Or is a narrow peninsula that provides the eastern limit of the bay of Moraira and provides some shelter for the pretty beach of El Portet. Sitting on top of the headland at a height of some 166m is the 11m high Torre del Cap d’Or which is a 16th century watchtower which formed part of the coastal defence system against raids by raiders from North Africa. This can be reached by way of a official local trail · the SL-CV 51 · which is well-signposted from its start-point in Calle Puerto Alcudia. The peninsula plunges steeply on either side to form spectacular cliffs. Erosion is slow but there are several caves to be found amongst the vertical drops. There is a rich and diverse natural vegetation which is part of the network of micro-reserves of the Comunidad Valenciana which protect rare plants and endangered species. Cap d’Or also forms part of the European Commission’s Europa 2000 Network of Sites of Community Interest.
